Panama Canal Locks – Panama – Daily Photo

This photo shows a cruise ship going through the first set of locks on the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal. This ship is not one of the new monster size cruise ships which would not fit. It gives you some idea why Panama is currently working on widening the canal as ship size is routinely limited by PanaMax, the largest ship that will fit through the canal. Ships pay more to enter the canal during the day and they pay based on the size of the ship. Our cruise ship paid around $100K to enter to the middle and then leave again the same way.

Love this! We are planning on going in September. However, we’ll be doing the half day tour that they offer, and hopefully not paying 100k for it
We were told it’s $100 per person!

The cheapest anyone has paid was Richard Halliburton who swam the locks in 1929 and paid 36 cents.

More power to you if you can swim the Canal… kind of a disappointment he still had to pay but makes for a good tid bit of information. Love the photos posted on all of your travels. Stunning.
