Travel to Belize – Episode 586

Hear about travel to Belize as the Amateur Traveler talks to Allison Greene from eternalarrival.com about her time in this small tropical country filled with shades of blue and green.

Allison says of Belize, “Belize is actually a very unique country within Central America. Most of Central America obviously is Spanish Speaking and has a history that is more influenced by Spanish colonization whereas Belize was one of the only countries that was colonized by the British. As a result, you have a really interesting mix of cultures happening there. You have everything from indigenous groups that came from the Caribbean, the Garifuna, and the Creole, and then you also have the Mestizo population and the Mayan population. So you’ve got a really interesting melting pot that you won’t see anywhere else in Central America.”

Allison takes us on an itinerary that starts in the capital Belize City but does not spend much time thee. We instead focus mostly on two different regions. First, she heads us north to the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye for some beach time and time in the water snorkeling with sharks, if we dare, as we enjoy one of the most beautiful reefs in the world. She guides us on what to order from the local restaurants in this laid back area.

Then we head to San Ignacio which she recommends as a base for some more adventure travel in Belize. From San Ignacio, she visited the Mayan ruins of Caracol where you can be one of a small group of people in the place and you can still climb the pyramids. She also went cave tubing through an underground river and also explored the ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal) which includes evidence of ritual use including human sacrifice.
